Join us for heritage open day! This weekend Jarrow Hall is exploring ‘Everyday histories’ of the Anglo-Saxon period.

Event happening Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th of September! come and celebrate your history here at Jarrow Hall

Jarrow Hall has something for everyone! Visit our Bede Museum to learn about the story of Anglo-Saxon Northumbria and the life of one of its most important figures, Bede. Head out onto our farm to meet our animal residents and visit our demonstration Anglo-Saxon village, Gyrwe, to see our reconstructed buildings and learn more about the lives of the Anglo-Saxons. 

This Heritage Open Day, dive into our activities and events. Speak to some of our staff and our heritage skills and living history volunteers to discover more about the daily lives of people in the Anglo-Saxon period and their many different skills, still preserved today by people like our volunteers. You can even try some yourself! Learn more about how the monks spent their days, and their many jobs from tending gardens to making manuscripts. You may even hear our Gregorian choir throughout the day signalling when the monks would have gone to prayer.

Living history group Regia Anglorum will also be doing some demonstrations throughout the day on Sunday the 20th of September.

Handle some of our objects to learn more about the lives of people in our more recent local history. See our spotlight display in our dedicated display case, showing some of the amazing objects excavated during our Jarrow Archaeological Mission (JAM) excavations last summer, along with some memories from local people of life in Jarrow in its more recent history.

Little ones can take part in a trail around our museum and farm to learn more about different jobs in the Anglo-Saxon period. If they don’t fancy that, they can take part in our many children’s activities around the museum. They can do crafts, play in our Minecraft reconstruction of our Anglo-Saxon village, and so much more!
