Jewellery making workshop.
The aim of this workshop is to introduce participants to the basics of sand
casting, resulting in a finished piece of jewellery that they can take home.
The session aims to expand participants’ creative outlooks while developing an appreciation for an ancient metalworking craft.
3-Hour Breakdown of Activity
Hour 0–1.5
Introductions and Design
Participants will be introduced to the workshop process and materials.
They will then design and form an item to cast using air-dry clay, creating a
pendant suitable for sand casting.
Hour 1.5–2
Casting the Piece
Participants will press their designs into the prepared sand moulds. Molten
pewter will then be poured into the moulds by the workshop leads for health
and safety reasons.
Hour 2–3
Finishing and Assembly
Once cooled, participants will sand and polish their cast pieces. As pewter
produces a clean cast, only light finishing will be required.
Participants will be invited to create a pendant, with guidance and inspiration from the workshop leads.
Air-dry clay will be sculpted by participants to create the basis of the
pendant. One restriction is that the piece can be no larger than the diameter of a £2 coin
