Jarrow Hall offers a range of immersive learning experiences for KS1 groups, from exploring our farm to creating things from the past.

Our theme for KS1 visits is ‘Changes through Time’, where we will explore how life and the world around us has changed between the Anglo-Saxon period over 1000 years ago to today.

KS1 groups will explore the farm discovering how farming practices have changed and how the animals have and continue to help us. A visit to the village will allow children to glimpse at how people might have lived in the past. You will also get to experience a KS1 themed Beowulf telling around the hearth.

We offer ‘Anglo-Saxon Observations of Seasonality’, a workshop with two different activity choices, to allow children to get hands on with the past and learn through doing.

You can pick:

Sol Monaþ (February), which Bede calls the ‘Month of Cakes’, where we will prepare and make Anglo-Saxon style cakes. These cakes were traditionally offered to mother earth.

OR

Liða-monaþ (June), which Bede names the ‘travelling month’. It was in this month that farmers would begin to shear their sheep. Using wool and various craft techniques, we will prepare some wool to weave and felt.

KS1 groups are also welcome to book in to visit St Paul’s Church, where we will explore St Bede and life as a monk. There is an additional charge of £0.50 for this option, which goes directly to St Paul’s Church.
