Our farm tour is a standard part of the package and you can then select two workshops.

The Development of Church, State and Society in Medieval Britain 1066-1509

Enjoy an interactive tour around a working, Early Medieval style farm to attain an understanding of the importance of farming in medieval society. Whilst on our tour, we will explore themes of the economy of medieval England, with specific reference to Newcastle and the North East, and the social structure as we delve into feudalism and the post-Norman Invasion social hierarchy.

Whilst on our tour, pupils will have the opportunity to explore a reconstruction, Early Medieval Hall and other buildings. Our Thirlings Hall provides the opportunity for students to attain a better understanding of what life would have been like for people living in medieval England.

In the hall, we will gather around the hearth and handle replica items that provide an insight into the tools, trades and lifestyle of farmers, and other people living in the English landscape between 1066-1509.

In this hands-on workshop, students will explore the Norman Invasion of England, 1066. We will delve into the build up to the invasion, what happened during the invasion and what England looked like afterwards.

In this workshop, you can expect replica handling, insights into the battle tactics of the 11th century and their evolution and a battle reenactment – requiring team work, tactics and drama!

This workshop will be a perfect supplement for groups studying themes around the Normans, the Norman Invasion, Medieval Warfare, Migration, War and Kingship.

In this session, groups can visit St Paul’s Church, a 1500 year-old Anglo-Saxon Monastery where St Bede lived during the Golden Age of Northumbria.

We will explore the importance of religion in daily life, and the importance of monasteries within broader society. Pupils will get the chance to dress up in a monks’ habit and enjoy a tour of the church. We will then discuss the rules of St Benedict, commonly followed in monasteries, before performing a Benedictine morning liturgy. Pupils will also leave with a wider knowledge of the daily routines of monks.

Subject to weather, we will take time to visit the monastic ruins surrounding St Paul’s Church.

This session is a fantastic support for pupils studying the development of Church and State, Norman England and Religion in Medieval England.

*there is an additional charge of 50p per pupil, which goes directly to support St Paul’s Church

Medicine though Time provides pupils with a chance to explore the ancient ideas of medicine and healing from the works of Galen to Anglo-Saxon herbal remedies. We will explore the cures and remedies found in books such as Bald’s Leechbook and understand Anglo-Saxon healing techniques and the importance of natural remedies such as herbs and their medicinal uses.

Pupils will have the chance to get hands-on by making one of Bald’s remedies, and understand why this medicine still has practical uses today.

This workshop is a perfect supplement for pupils studying Medicine through Time at GCSE level or for a wider view of daily life.
