Works on our museum roof begin this month. The end of drip buckets, wet floor signs and indoor rain is here. Here’s what’s going on and how it affects you!

Our museum constantly leaks. If you’ve ever visited you might have guessed this from the number of buckets and wet floor signs everywhere. In fact, for a long time it’s been hard to imagine Jarrow Hall without its colourful floor ornaments – dodging buckets around the floors is just part of everyday life.

Well, we are excited to finally announce, keeping in theme with the rest of the museum, that this will soon be a thing of the past! After years of indoor rain, we have been granted funding from Arts Council England through the Museum and Estate Development Fund to fix the building!

Major works on the museum roof commence on Monday 4th November and run until March 2025. During the first phase of works, trucks will remove and recycle the layer of pebble that holds our current roof in place. Leaks and repairs needed will then be identified before the final refurbishments and roofing stages take place in the new year.

This is a huge investment into Jarrow Hall and therefore the wider South Tyneside community and we couldn’t be more excited for the transformation!

What this means

Firstly, that we won’t have any more indoor weather!

But in the meantime: to accommodate the roof works, half of our shared Priority Car Park will have to close during between November 2024 and March 2025. Our disabled bays will not be affected and our Main Car Park will remains unchanged.

Both Jarrow Hall and Hive Coffee Company will be open as usual.
