(St Brigid’s Cross)
The 1st of February is the Gaelic festival of Imbolc which marks the beginning of Spring, as well as the feast day of Saint Brigid, Ireland’s patroness saint.
As part of re-opening weekend (sat 15th & Sun 16th Feb) visitors will be able to make St Brigid’s crosses, along with our new puzzle hunt to our opening exhibition, with other activities like handling ancient artefacts.
Although the customs of Imbolc were not written about until the Early Modern Era, it is believed to be an important Pagan festival associated with the Goddess Brigid and the lambing season. It is also a Christian celebration of Saint Brigid of Kildare.
Since 2023 Imbolc/St Brigid’s day has been an annual public holiday in the Republic of Ireland.
