Our Story

Jarrow Hall has been managed and operated by Groundwork South and North Tyneside since 2016, in partnership with South Tyneside Council.

Groundwork is a charity that is passionate about creating a brighter, and more prosperous future for the communities we work with. Helping to build safer and stronger communities, improve people’s health, well-being, and prospects, and promote environmental sustainability.

Staying true to our mission of ‘Changing Places, Changing Lives’, our trust saw the potential in this extraordinary place so we embarked on a long-term development which would see us deliver a vision; a world-class heritage attraction incorporating the life-changing work of our trust, while maintaining the remarkable legacy of Bede at its heart.

Since opening we’ve welcomed over 50,000 visitors and immersed thousands of schoolchildren in the world of Bede and Anglo-Saxon Northumbria. None of which would have been possible without the amazing contributions of valuable partnerships.

We have worked with the Friends of the World of Bede, Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums, St. Paul’s Church, Durham World Heritage Site and more to lead Jarrow Hall into an exciting new future.

We have also worked closely with archaeologist and academic Dame Rosemary Cramp, whos’ ground-breaking work at the monastic sites of Jarrow and Monkwearmouth inspired the creation of the museum. Which now proudly displays many of the incredible artefacts found during the archaeological digs. As well as

We have secured highly-competitive funding from Heritage Lottery, People’s Postcode Lottery, Arts Council and the Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund; achieved Working towards Accreditation status from Arts Council England; created classrooms for learners with learning difficulties and disabilities; welcomed experimental archaeologists from Newcastle University, placements from Durham University and forged new relationships with institutions across the world.

We’ll continue to increase the understanding of our history, taking care of our collection and this exceptional place for future generations to enjoy.

If you wish to support us, with either feeding the animals or repairs to the Anglo-Saxon Village please make a donation.
