Now on display in our main hall just past reception are some stained glass works created here at Jarrow Hall. In 2024 we have been celebrating the achievements of Professor Dame Rosemary Cramp. As part of this we have been hosting workshops with local artist Chris Dalton. In these, members of the public have been able to create their own stained glass works using the traditional tools and techniques from the time of Bede.
Some of Professor Camp’s most valued finds were the small but strikingly vibrant pieces of stained glass were excavated at St Pauls (Jarrow) and, to celebrate her contributions she has made, several professional glass windows were commissioned and are on display in one of our rooms.
The art of making stained glass windows has been practised for over 1000 years. Jarrow monastic site produced the largest collection of coloured window glass (surprisingly, a separate thing from stained glass) from the 7th and 8th centuries in Europe. To learn more about both types of glass, come down and visit Jarrow Hall and see our displays.
