Yesterday we were delighted to have the Mayor and Mayoress of South Tyneside visit us for our Breaking Ground event in Drewetts Park. Final preparations were underway as our archaeology team of volunteers and staff finished de-turfing the trench areas ahead of the official community excavation beginning this week.

We were also joined by trustees, stakeholders from St Paul’s church, South Tyneside Council, Friends of the World of Bede and our archaeological company ARS, who it was lovely to have all together to celebrate this new era of excavations on the Jarrow monastery site.

Our JAM community excavation begins this first week of September and continues for 4 weeks, with public participation available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Please note that participants must be aged 18+ and must sign up to volunteer on the excavation in advance.

Thanks again to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for funding this increasingly exciting project.
